PUMA
The Puma (cougar) is a shy animal and for this reason is very difficult to hunt. The hunting capabilities of the Puma are well known by the Argentine farmers as they may usually hunt small calves, lambs and pigs and if unable to locate these smaller domestics will even kill cows and small horses. This species (Felix concolor) is native to La Pampa and they live in all parts of the country. Its ability to adapt to a changing environment has helped it not only to survive but also to increase in numbers throughout the country.

In Argentina, most hunters like to wait for the puma at the water or where he left his last victim Alternatively, the puma can be hunted with dogs. They are most plentiful in late winter and early spring when the young of their prey are born. Hunter and guide wait for the puma from late afternoon until nightfall in a blind placed near a watering hole. Live bait (lambs, goats) may also used to attract them. They are often seen in the early morning during the rut season while stalking deer. However, pumas are generally overall difficult to find and it is not possible to guarantee that every hunter will obtain one. If a client is especially interested in this species, arrangements can be made to make multiple visits at various ranches or farms in the area to increase his odds of finding a puma. |
